Mission

The Chemical Reaction Engineering Laboratory (CREL) at Washington University in St. Louis is a unique academic organization that pools industrial resources for needed long term research in reaction engineering of multiphase systems, conducts such fundamental research and transfers the results to industrial practice. CREL provides broad and in-depth reaction engineering education and training both to students and industrial practitioners. CREL makes it possible for industrial sponsors to take a long term view and participate in the development of new ideas, methods and techniques. By pooling industrial resources together with governmental funding, CREL offers unique and attractive opportunities for leveraging of resources of individual companies. In an era of diminishing resources and engineering staff, CREL also provides invaluable opportunities for continued reaction engineering research contract work.

We at CREL believe that all activities of human endeavor that require chemical and physical conversion of raw materials into final products will in the future increasingly rely on application of reaction engineering principles. Therefore, CREL is committed to further development of reaction engineering theory and practice in solving a variety of practical and fundamental problems in the fuels, chemicals, petrochemicals, materials, biochemicals and environmental industries.

As far as graduate students are concerned, M. P. Dudukovic, CREL Director says:

"My greatest satisfaction comes from providing them with opportunities to explore their ideas and seeing them mature in the realization of these ideas. All my doctoral students have the opportunity to teach me something, and I feel a great sense of accomplishment when they have become better than me in their chosen speciality."
